Wells Fargo - Predatory Lending

On Feb. 28, 2003, Minnesota ACORN members protested the predatory lending of Wells Fargo.

Feb 28, 2003

Predatory Lenders make home loans with unfair and abusive terms. These lenders target low income and minority homebuyers, and capitalize on these buyers’ lack of knowledge of complicated transactions—or use outright deception—to close loans that lead to a loss of equity or foreclosure.
ACORN strives to end these abuses by actively putting pressure on Predatory Lending offenders and advocating for legislation, regulation, education and research to end abusive lending practices.

Minneapolis Living Wage Campaign Kick Off

July 18, 2005

On June 23, Minnesota ACORN and the other members of the Minneapolis Living Wages Yes! Coalition kicked off the community drive to pass a strong living wage law in Minneapolis with a rally and door knocking, at the Communication Workers of America Local 7200 in Minneapolis.
The living wage law would cover large businesses that receive significant City resources in the form of contracts or subsidies. The law would establish a standard requiring those b... [more]

ACORN Says: Coldwell Banker, You're No Good, You Rip Off Our Neighborhood

May 25,2006

The rally took place at the Coldwell Bankers’ Office at the 7550 France Avenue location on May 25,2006. Nearly 50 area residents carried placards and chanted slogans objecting to finance practices that have bilked low-income Minnesota homeowners out of tens of thousands of dollars during refinancing and first-home purchase transactions.

Parents with children, seniors, immigrant citizens, and students voiced their contempt for unfair lending practices at the rally. [more]

The following statistics that appeared in a March report to the City Council demonstrate the importance of the Foreclosure Prevention Program to Minneapolis:

Since 1991, more than 8,100 families have been served by the program.

Three years after participating in the program, 61% of those who have left the program have remained current on their mortgage

In the first half of 2005:
85% of the households served were families with children.
63% of the households served were families of color.
84% of the households served were at or below 50% of the area median income.

October 23,2006

At the Oct 23rd Meeting it was decided to go ahead with the action at the Corner Store on Central Ave. that is selling drug paraphernalia.  Be sure to attend the Nov 20 meeting to help finalize the plan for ACTION.

Also it was decided to draft a letter to Gov. Mike Hatch to be sent when he wins the election. As a friend of Acorn, we want to congratulate him on winning the election and also ask that he reinstate the State Wide Violent Crimes and Gang Strike Force that Tim Pawlenty had gutted in 2003. This would be a good thing for all of Minnesota Acorn.

City ordinance offers new tool to
encourage peaceful neighborhoods

Beginning on July 1, 2006, Minneapolis Police will have a new way to help keep neighborhoods peaceful and livable. In February, the City Council passed a new ordinance in response to neighborhood complaints that police lacked an effective set of tools to manage the noise, litter, and unruly behavior that accompany many house parties and residential events.

On July 1, police will begin enforcing a new ordinance that allows landlords and property owners to be cited and possibly fined for noisy or unruly activities on their properties. Police will mail warning notices to property owners or landlords when noisy or unruly gatherings happen on their property.

The warning notices let owners and landlords know they could be fined if there is a similar incident in the next 180 days. After the warning letter is sent, landlords have a 21-day grace period before the can be fined, to give them time to take steps to correct the problem without paying fines.

The measure asks property owners and landlords to work with police to implement a plan to reduce the frequency and severity of noisy or unruly activities in the future. Community members, landlords, or property owners who have questions about the new process should call the neighborhood crime prevention specialist located in their police precinct. To find out who the crime prevention specialist is in your neighborhood, visit http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/safe/safe-teams.asp.

Members Meeting Update

Our meeting was highly productive on Monday, June 26, 2006! We will continue our efforts with the petitions and letters supporting more police in the NE area! If you were not able to come to the meeting, please take the time to download the letters on our website: www.neacorn.com and sign them. Return them at the next meeting or drop them off at my house- 950 27th Ave. NE. The more letters we can collect, the more power our voices have at the city council meeting and the mayor's office! It will only take a few minutes of your time and it is vital that we reach as many members signatures by the end of July. We would like to take as many members as we can to the actions in August! We voted yes to help NE Citizen's Patrol on tracking inadequate houses in the NE area. We will have more info coming on this project in July! This is an issue of making bad landlords accountable to their properties. Many of us here in the NE are concerned with the unhealthy rentals we have in our area! Members can do something positive to help decrease this problem, and get involved in the next few meetings.!

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH OF OUR NEW CO-CHAIRS: Anna Ames and Rita Schultz. They accepted the positions of co-chairs for the next three months!  COME TO THE NEXT MEETING AND GIVE YOUR SUPPORT! If you know of someone who would be interested in being a part of ACORN, please talk to them, send me their name and phone # via email, and I can get in touch with them! I would stop by to visit them at their home! We also sent letters to some of our representatives who were on the NE parade, thanking them for supporting the parade, and reinforcing statements about our goal for more police in the area. We will continue to network with other area groups in the neighborhood, so if you go to any other meetings here in the NE, let's share information with the groups, so we can compliment one another. We have added links to some of the groups to our website, and we would like to expand the links! There are many ways in which members can help our NE membership grow! IF YOU CAN NOT ATTEND THE MEETINGS, THERE ARE OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP OUT! Email me and I can let you know what you could do to help: leannrussel@gmail.com We really need lots more people to join Acorn Our next two meetings will be Tuesday, July 11th and Thursday, July 27th! Hope all members have a great week!                                                     Thanks! LeAnn Russel

NE PARADE

If you were not there last night at the NE Parade, you missed a great parade. There were lots of people on Central Ave with a friendly atmosphere and very family oriented. Having Guardian Angels present really helped make a more secure felling. The taste of NE Minneapolis at the East Side Coop was a pleasant treat for the kids as well as the pallet.

Events

Next meeting: Audubon Park 6/26 at 7PM, will start new project with NECP!

It would be great to see more members come to the meeting!

WE CAN WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES!

If anyone is interested in going to the National Convention in Columbus, Ohiio in July, call me at home on a Sunday. Preferably when I am home and can talk to you a bit more about the details of the trip! It is only a couple of weeks away, so let me know soon! My home phone is 612-788-6951.

Our next two meetings will be at Audubon as well on 7/11 and 7/27! Talk to your neighbors and let them know if they are interested in coming to the meetings!

WE KNOW WHEN WE HAVE MORE MEMBERS ON BOARD, OUR MESSAGE WILL BE HEARD!

What can we do to make the changes happen? We want a safe neighborhood and we need to be involved in order for that to occur! This is a call to action for us all to come together for ourselves and for the area!

Have a great week!

LeAnn

A Letter from LeAnn

I am your new NE organizer, LeAnn Russel. I went to the 2nd precinct meeting in NE Mpls., Monday evening, June 5, 2006. The precinct works with a minimum of police officers to cover our NE Minneapolis area. We have six officers during the day, 6-7 during the evening, and 6--7 during the night. The department would like to do more for us, but their hands are tied from the top down. Mayor Rybak will not be hiring a new police chief until after Labor Day weekend. I believe this will lead to more instability in our neighborhood. It is vital we pursue our letter writing campaign and make our city council members and Mayor Rybak accountable for their inadequate leadership. They don't live in our neighborhood, and we need additional officers for protection. We have posted the policing letters on our website and you can downlaod them. LETTER TO THE MAYOR, LETTER TO THE CITY COUNCIL. Make as many copies as you like, hand them out in your neighborhood, and to family members as well! Please return as many signed letters as possible by our meeting on Monday, June 26th!

Thanks!

LeAnn Russel

Safety Meeting Recap
June 14th at the NE Park Building as seen on TV

by John Schulte

Our count last night for the meeting was over 200, good turn out. But like was said, it's the follow-up and holding them to their words is what's going to count.

I like your petition,( http://www.neacorn.com/petition1.pdf ) but as you know we have all sent letters and stated our opinion before for a few years now. Nothing has happened. Since this is an election year, you may want to consider a petition of "No Confidence" for certain leaders if they don't follow up this summer. No politician wants their name in the news this way just as they're asking for votes. Just a thought.

We are still a year or more off from any significant changes in police staff at the 2nd. They made that clear. The 71 new cops being hired now is for the whole city, (five precincts) and they will have training for at least six months after they are hired. So until then we are on our own. Period.

So one of the most important things we can do right now is forcing slumlords to fix their property. These places house many of the criminals. We must force our elected officials to enforce city codes on these chronic problem property owners and fine them over and over again. No exceptions. We do have control of this. We must bend their ears over and over again on these properties.

Slumlords only act when they are hit in the pocket book. The NECP walking groups have forms they fill out for each problem property and then call 311 and get a tracking number. We need help following up on these complaints two to three weeks later.

I would love to have NEACORN members help with this. To make sure our codes and 311 calls are acted upon. I think this would be one great way for us to work together and not duplicate efforts.

Thank you all for helping NE get fixed.

Best regards,
John Schulte
